Buying Used Forklifts Shouldn’t Be a Terrifying Experience

November 30, 2010 at 9:10 AMRing Power

How to evaluate a used forklift and things to look for to avoid getting ripped off.used and reconditioned forklifts

Purchasing a used forklift does not have to be a monumental expenditure, and with careful consideration, a used forklift might make fiscal sense. Even though buying used forklifts makes sense for some material handling applications, there are many benefits and pitfalls to compare and consider during the purchasing decision.

When Buying a Used Forklift Makes Sense
• Lower cost
• Avoid loss of depreciation
• Avoids long lead times
• Has some form of used warranty and/or guarantee
• Fits your material handling application because it doesn’t require you purchasing a new one
• Might come with additional parts, accessories, and other items

But Be Cautious!
Looks can be decieving, here are some tips when you're ready to buy a used forklift:

• Wear – some forklifts for sale can be completely worn out or not operable when purchased
• Older forklifts may not have the latest safety items, features and options
• Won’t last as long as a new version because there are already a number of hours on the motor, chassis and other components.

Another useful tool in your selection process is how to evaluate used forklifts. Determination should be made for what kind of forklift and any attachments that your application will require. In other words, what kind of capacity, lift height, lift weight, side shift, etc., will you need? Carefully consider the make and model because some trucks are easier to get reliable maintenance for and have greater parts availability than others. Make sure to ask for all maintenance records and if none exist, have the truck mechanically evaluated. Look for leaks in the transmission, mast and tilt cylinders, differential, radiator and engine. Test drive the unit in order to check all of its operations. Lift a load with the forklift to see how it operates under normal operating conditions and make sure all attachments are functioning properly. And lastly, evaluate the dealer you are considering purchasing from. What is their reputation? How long have they been in business? Do they have certified mechanics on staff?

With this said, finding a reputable dealer is the important link to the used forklift purchasing process. Make sure you know who you are buying from and that you are dealing with a strong company that can back their used equipment. This company should have a sound service department with qualified mechanics and have a parts department that could supply your parts orders quickly.

What Makes Our Trucks Different?
Ring Power Lift Trucks' Used Forklifts Department purchases all of its equipment from reputable venders, customers, and has the option of pulling units out of our rental fleet. We then perform the following services on each lift truck:

• Our service department performs a complete inspection and steam cleans every used lift truck.
• A condition report is generated and reviewed by the Used Forklift Manager. All necessary repairs are preformed and a complete safety check is completed to insure a Ring Power Certified Used piece of equipment.
• After the lift truck's inspection and before the unit is put in to inventory or delivered to the customer, the service department completes a final Quality Control Inspection Report.
This report insures customer satisfaction at time of delivery.
• Most important thing in this process is the paperwork from the time the unit has been purchased to the time the customer expects delivery.
The used equipment process is designed to assure you, our customer, that the used forklift you've purchased has met Ring Power Standards and is labeled as Ring Power Certified.

Used forklifts are an economical solution for the right application. Do your homework and you could save yourself a lot of money on your next used forklift purchase.

If you feel a used and reconditioned forklift will suit your manufacturing or material handling operation, feel free to browse our online inventory of used forklifts. Retrofit Emission Solutions for Buses, Semi-Trucks and Heavy-duty Diesel Trucks Now Available

November 4, 2010 at 9:10 AMRing Power
Donaldson helps semi-truck owners and users to meet critical emissions with filter-based solutions, DOC mufflers and crankcase filtration.

Look to Donaldson for high-efficiency filter-based solutions, diesel oxidation catalyst mufflers and crankcase filtration.retrofit emission muffler kits

In addition to other diesel truck parts, Ring Power is now the Donaldson Certified Emission Dealer for Florida. Ring Power sells and services all semi-truck, buses, and heavy-duty on-highway diesel engine emissions and environmental needs. Donaldson’s full-line of products is available, from something as simple as a DOC (diesel oxidation catalyst) which simply replaces a standard muffler to a full-blown DPF (diesel particulate filter) system.

Diesel engines are a reliable and efficient power source for vehicle and equipment manufacturers and, depending on the age of the engine, emit harmful emissions into the air. Governmental regulations across the globe are driving diesel engine users to consider buying new vehicles or retrofitting their existing engines to meet the new requirements. Donaldson takes a patented “total system approach” to retrofit – delivering solutions that reduce not just what comes out of your tailpipe, but offers a solution to eliminate emissions generated from the crankcase. We have CARB and U.S. EPA-verified solutions and an installation service network ready to help you select the best solution for your fleet.

Ring Power provides the following Donaldson filtration solutions:
» DOC's which reduce particulate matter by as much as 20-25%.
» Spiracle crankcase filtration systems eliminate harmful and unwanted crankcase emissions and allow crankcase to be closed without degrading performance which when combined with DOC's increase the reduction of particulate matter.
» SEF Muffler System (semi-active electric filter) which is a CARB level 3  DPF device.
» LNF and LXF DPF muffler systems is a CARB level 3 device using passive technology. This provides the highest amount of PM reduction available today at >90%. Passive DPF's are sensitive to exhaust temperature and minimums must be met to ensure consistent and reliable DPF regeneration.
» Complete emission retrofit kits, including installation hardware, are available.

Ring Power is also your source for DPF filter cleaning. Give us a call to see how we can clean your DPF filter. You'll definitely be glad you did!

What Is Diesel Exhaust Fluid and Is It Safe for Farm Tractors?

October 28, 2010 at 8:48 AMRing Power
describes what diesel exhaust fluid is and its safety aspects.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), also knows as AdBlue, is a non-hazardous, high-purity, colorless solution containing 32.5% automotive grade urea. The rest is de-ionized water. diesel exhaust fluidThe automotive grade urea is made up of ammonia and carbon dioxide just like other urea products. The difference is that DEF has all impurities removed that could interfere with AGCO and Challenger’s e3™ System. DEF is available at all Ring Power locations selling e3-equipped products, many truck stops (such as Pilot, Travel America, Flying J, and Loves), and truck dealerships. The list of available outlets is growing daily.
Urea has many uses. It’s used as an artificial fertilizer and is found in cosmetics and other products. It’s manufactured to ISO and SAE standards. Facilities that comply with these standards are inspected and certified by the American Petroleum Institute to ensure the highest quality product.
DEF is non-toxic, non-hazardous, and requires no special permits or licenses. Tier 3 e3 agricultural tractors will use up to 3% of DEF as compared to diesel fuel consumption. Even with a small 8-gallon tank, that is roughly one DEF for two fuel fills.

Manufactured to ISO Standards
    – 67.5% Automotive Grade Urea
    – 32.5% De-ionized Water
Non-Toxic and Non-Hazardous
Only Slightly Corrosive
Consumption Rate
    – 3% of Diesel Use
    – Roughly 1 Tank per 2 Diesel Tanks

Ring Power' Agricultural Division sells and leases new and used Challenger Agricultural and Farm Tractors throughout Florida and the Southeast, with service and repair facilities located in Perry, Tallahassee, Lake City, Gainesville, Jacksonville, Ocala, St. Augustine and Tampa. Ring Power’s Cat Rental Store Adds Cat’s® New Compact Track Loader to Rental Fleet

October 25, 2010 at 3:47 PMRing Power

Vertical-Lift 259B Series 3—with Fully Suspended Undercarriage—Is Powerful, Agile Addition to the Cat® Compact Track Loader Range 259B3 Compact Track Loader

The new 259B3 is a high-performance, highly maneuverable addition to the Cat Compact Track Loader (CTL) range. By combining its small-frame CTL platform with the Cat C3.4T DIT engine, high breakout forces and strong auxiliary hydraulic performance, Caterpillar designed the 259B3 as a "power dense" machine capable of taking on the toughest jobs in confined spaces. With premium features such as an independent, fully suspended steel undercarriage, aggressive steel embedded rubber tracks, powerful hydraulics and refined operator's station, the 259B3 completes the CTL line by providing a durable, versatile machine that works productively in poor soils and harsh environments.

Rated at 71 net horsepower (53 KW) the 259B3 is powered by the C3.4T DIT engine, which complies with U.S. EPA Tier-4 Interim and E.U. Stage-3A emissions regulations. This proven engine delivers ample speed and torque in difficult applications, and combined with the Cat anti-stall system, the 259B3 can operate at part-throttle, reducing fuel consumption and lowering sound levels.

At 35 percent tipping load, rated operating capacity for the 259B3 is 2,065 pounds (937 kg), and 2,950 pounds (1 338 kg) at 50 percent tipping load, increasing to 3,000 pounds (1 360 kg) with the optional counterweight. Vertical-lift loader linkage gives the new CTL 120 inches (3 046 mm) of lift height, in combination with excellent reach, for easy truck loading and precise material placement.

Durable, easy-riding undercarriage

The 259B3 is the only machine in its class with a standard, independent, fully suspended undercarriage. Designed and manufactured by Caterpillar, the undercarriage uses four heavy-duty torsion axles (concentric tubular members buffered by an elastomeric material). These extremely durable axles move independently to isolate the machine chassis from the undercarriage and absorb much of the shock from rough-terrain operation. The customer realizes the benefits of suspension in the form of smooth travel, even at high speed, excellent load retention, increased productivity, as well as extended machine and undercarriage component life.

High-performance hydraulics

Hydraulic pumps for the 259B3's implement system (boom and bucket) and auxiliary system (for powering work tools) are driven directly from the engine, eliminating intermediate drive belts to assure maximum efficiency, performance and reliability. The robust auxiliary system supplies oil flow up to 22 gpm (83 L/min) at pressures to 3,335 psi (23 000 kPa)—generating a calculated hydraulic-horsepower rating of 42.8 (31.9 kW).

Operator comfort, convenience and safety

Designed for optimal comfort, convenience and safety, the 259B3's spacious operator's compartment features low-effort, pilot-control joysticks—the right controlling lift and tilt functions, and the left, direction and speed. Joysticks provide the convenience of one-touch control of continuous or intermittent auxiliary flow. With both hand and foot throttles as standard equipment, the 259B3 can be set for constant-speed operation (trenching or milling, for instance), or speed can be varied (truck loading and load-and-carry). An anti-stall system is designed to prevent engine stalling, even at part-throttle, by constantly balancing speed and torque demands.
