Air Compressors

Sullair Air Compressors are the Choice of PolarClean for Cryogenic Blasting—December 2011

Cleaning with dry ice is a concept that’s quickly expanding. The PolarClean system uses small rice-size pellets of dry ice and shoots them out of a nozzle with compressed air and Sullair portable air compressor. It’s similar to sandblasting, high-pressure water or steam blasting but with superior results. The -110°F (-78°C) temperature of the dry ice "blasts" the material to be removed, causing it to shrink and lose adhesion from its subsurface. When the dry ice penetrates the material to be removed, and it contacts the underlying surface, the warmer subsurface causes the dry ice to convert back into carbon dioxide gas. Once converted, the gas now has 800 times greater volume and expands behind the material, speeding up its removal. Only this material must be disposed because the dry ice vaporizes into the atmosphere.

Replaces Sandblasting
This method is superior to sand blasting because dry ice eliminates equipment damage. It does not erode or wear away the targeted surface as traditional grit media. Therefore, integrity and critical tolerances are preserved. With abrasive cleaning methods, equipment must be transported to and from the dedicated cleaning area. With dry ice blasting, most cleaning is done in place.

PolarClean uses a Sullair 375 AF portable air compressor to deliver the clean dry air necessary for dry ice blasting. Click to view common applications for dry ice blasting.
