This past spring, the 2011 Florida SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Conference drew to a close at the Manatee Civic Center in Bradenton, where over 3000 students, educators, business people and supporters from across the state gathered for the 44th annual event. In all, more than 1300 students from 83 high schools, technical centers and colleges throughout Florida competed in 188 skills and leadership contests—the largest number of contests and greatest number of schools in the history of the conference!

Ring Power Corporation supports the mission of SkillsUSA by taking part every year in the organization’s state-level competitions. This year, nine students competed in the Diesel Equipment Technology trials, which were held in Ring Power’s Sarasota’s heavy equipment shops. Tampa Training Instructor Josh Markosen volunteered his services as a judge of the contestants’ hydraulic fundamentals skills; Ring Power Training Instructor Bob Delp judged contestants on electrical fundamentals skills; Sarasota Heavy Equipment Technician James Freeman judged their electronic engine skills; Sarasota Heavy Equipment Technician Josh Ritter judged their preventive maintenance skills; and Sarasota Heavy Equipment Service Business Manager Nathan Worley judged job interviewing skills.

Dwayne Rainer, Lakeland Cat Rental Store Field Service Technician, has been involved with SkillsUSA since he was a student. In 1990, when he was class president of his school’s chapter, Rainer took first place in the Florida diesel equipment technology competition and fourth place in the National Competition. Last year, as event chairman of the diesel equipment technology competition, Rainer organized the flow of students through the skill stations and assisted with judging, tallying and submitting the final competition results. This year, Rainer served as coordinator of the competition.

Track-type Tractor Rebuild Saves Brevard County Money–April 2011

    April 20, 2011 at 1:03 PMRing Power
Brevard County saved many with a major rebuild of their landfill machines.

Daily operating conditions at Brevard County Landfill are extremely harsh. Sharp fragments, corrosive materials and sticky debris work their way into a machine’s components, accelerating wear and tear. Brevard County’s Solid Waste Division recetrack-type tractor after reuildntly rebuilt two of their worn fleet machines, a Caterpillar® D7R track-type tractor and a Caterpillar M316 wheeled excavator, at a fraction of the cost of buying new.

Justin William’s, Palm Bay Heavy Equipment PSSR, persistence convinced Brevard County officials that a Ring Power rebuild would help get their money’s worth out of their Cat machines, and his timing couldn’t have been better. Accustomed to replacing equipment every five years, Brevard County had not considered a rebuild since 1999, when the landfill’s 826C landfill compactor was rebuilt. Once officials started comparing current equipment pricing with Ring Power’s rebuild options, County officials saw the advantage: the powertrain rebuilds would save more than $415,000 when compared to the cost of replacing the two machines.

The D7R was transported to Tampa’s Major Component Rebuild Center (MCRC) in early December 2010. Component specialists rebuilt the powertrain—engine, transmission, final drives, drive axles, differentials, hydraulic cylinders, pumps and motors—inspecting, testing and replacing as needed. Several weeks later, the M316 was brought in to Palm Bay’s service shop. Both rebuilds were completed within the scheduled 30 days, but the M316 was not delivered to Brevard County until March, after some additional work was completed.

Brevard County solid waste officials are very pleased with the “good as new” quality of the rebuilds—right down to the paint jobs! Congratulations to Ring Power’s Heavy Equipment service and product support personnel in Palm Bay and Tampa who made the rebuilds happen!

When it comes to overall productivity and operating cost, a Cat® machine is the best equipment investment you can make. When most competitive models reach the end of their life cycle, replacement may be the only solution. But Cat equipment has a sustainable design that allows the machine to be remanufactured by reusing many of the original parts, reducing waste and delivering a cost-effective alternative to replacing with new equipment.

Retrofit Emission Solutions for Buses, Semi-Trucks and Heavy-duty Diesel Trucks Now Available

    November 4, 2010 at 9:10 AMRing Power
Donaldson helps semi-truck owners and users to meet critical emissions with filter-based solutions, DOC mufflers and crankcase filtration.

Look to Donaldson for high-efficiency filter-based solutions, diesel oxidation catalyst mufflers and crankcase filtration.retrofit emission muffler kits

In addition to other diesel truck parts, Ring Power is now the Donaldson Certified Emission Dealer for Florida. Ring Power sells and services all semi-truck, buses, and heavy-duty on-highway diesel engine emissions and environmental needs. Donaldson’s full-line of products is available, from something as simple as a DOC (diesel oxidation catalyst) which simply replaces a standard muffler to a full-blown DPF (diesel particulate filter) system.

Diesel engines are a reliable and efficient power source for vehicle and equipment manufacturers and, depending on the age of the engine, emit harmful emissions into the air. Governmental regulations across the globe are driving diesel engine users to consider buying new vehicles or retrofitting their existing engines to meet the new requirements. Donaldson takes a patented “total system approach” to retrofit – delivering solutions that reduce not just what comes out of your tailpipe, but offers a solution to eliminate emissions generated from the crankcase. We have CARB and U.S. EPA-verified solutions and an installation service network ready to help you select the best solution for your fleet.

Ring Power provides the following Donaldson filtration solutions:
» DOC's which reduce particulate matter by as much as 20-25%.
» Spiracle crankcase filtration systems eliminate harmful and unwanted crankcase emissions and allow crankcase to be closed without degrading performance which when combined with DOC's increase the reduction of particulate matter.
» SEF Muffler System (semi-active electric filter) which is a CARB level 3  DPF device.
» LNF and LXF DPF muffler systems is a CARB level 3 device using passive technology. This provides the highest amount of PM reduction available today at >90%. Passive DPF's are sensitive to exhaust temperature and minimums must be met to ensure consistent and reliable DPF regeneration.
» Complete emission retrofit kits, including installation hardware, are available.

See some of the Donaldson retrofit emmission solutions by clicking the PDF below

Ring Power is also your source for DPF filter cleaning. Give us a call to see how we can clean your DPF filter. You'll definitely be glad you did!

Ring Power Launches New Tier 4 Website

    August 20, 2010 at 4:19 PMRing Power

Ring Power Is Your Guide to Understanding EPA Tier 4 Emissions Regulations Ctaerpillar Egine Tier 4 Compliance Technology

Ring Poweralways strives to keep our customers informed and up to date with the latest information pertaining to you. That’s why we’ve launched a brand new website explaining the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 4 emissions regulations and what it means for you, the business owners, customers and hard workers. Ring Power wants to help educate our heavy construction equipment and power systems customers on this detailed new regulation so that they can be informed to make the best business decisions possible. It is always our goal to serve you. Please read for more information on Tier 4 below and then visit our new website at http://emissions.catdealer.com/ringpower.

The United States and European Union (EU) are implementing significant regulations that mandate the lowest emitting non-road equipment in history. Canada and Japan are expected to release similar regulatory programs yet this year. These regulations, which are known as U.S. Tier 4 // EU Stage IIIB/IV, will result in non-road equipment approaching near-zero emissions of particulate matter (PM) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx).

Transition to these standards is challenging for non-road equipment manufacturers. For Caterpillar alone, hundreds of complex products with unique and challenging application spectrums must be re-engineered to accommodate the lower emitting engines being developed to meet these standards.

Regulators recognize the challenge and the difficulty non-road equipment manufacturers would face if they had to introduce all of their new lower emitting products on one particular date. To address these transition challenges, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has allowed for implementation of the upcoming emission standards in two phases: Tier 4 Interim and Tier 4 Final. Tier 4 Interim is effective 1 Jan 2011 for 130-560 kW non-road engines and 1 Jan 2012 for 56-130 kW non-road engines. Tier 4 Final emission standards apply after the 2014 model year. The EU’s Stage IIIB and Stage IV emissions levels and regulatory dates are essentially the same as EPA’s.

In addition, under its Transition Program for Equipment Manufacturers ("TPEM," which is commonly known as the "flex" program), EPA also allows equipment manufacturers to continue to introduce equipment powered with engines meeting prior Tier emission requirements for a certain limited percentage of their overall production volumes during the Tier 4 timeframe. The EU also has a "flex" transition program, as well as a unique "sell off" program, both of which allow equipment manufacturers to continue selling prior Tier machines in order to allow for a smooth transition to the more stringent EU emission standards. These transitional programs are calculated into the environmental benefits regulators forecast when developing these programs.

Caterpillar has a robust Tier 4 introduction plan, which is structured to transition from Tier 3 to Tier 4 products in a smooth and orderly fashion utilizing a variety of the transitional tools provided in the regulations in order to maximize value to you, our customers.

Please visit our new website to learn more about Tier 4 at http://emissions.catdealer.com/ringpower . The emissions education website also has contact information for Tier 4 Specialists at http://emissions.catdealer.com/ringpower/contact-us .
