Florida's Largest Peanut Farmer Prefers Challenger Agricultural Equipment

May 17, 2010 at 9:18 AMRing Power

Gene Waldron Explains Why He Chooses Challenger over John Deere Tractors Gene Waldron Shows Famous Green Peanuts

"God first, family second and farming third." These are words Mr. Gene Waldron (of Waldron Farms’ green peanut fame) lives by. He says, "It really is just that simple."

Waldron’s journey as a peanut farmer began fifty years ago. He quit school and went to work farming at the age of fifteen. He began with one hundred acres of peanut fields in 1959. He would sell these peanuts to the Jacksonville Farmers Market by way of a neighbor’s truck and a borrowed tank of gas. Waldron recalls, "My neighbor had a truck he said he’d sell me for sixty-five dollars. I said, ‘Okay, I’ll buy the truck, but can I borrow five dollars for gas?’" At fifteen, he then drove without a driver’s license from Citra, Florida up to Jacksonville to the Farmers Market. He did this for two weeks and the following Monday returned to his neighbor to repay him for the truck and the gas money. And that’s where it all began.

Fast-forward fifty years and Gene Waldron now farms 7,000 acres of peanuts across the state of Florida. He owns 3,200 acres near Citra and leases the remaining land farther south where he has a longer warm season for growing. Waldron Farms are particularly well known for their "green" peanut. The green peanut has reached its full maturation size, but is not allowed to completely dry out. This creates a taste that most peanut connoisseurs prefer. Green peanuts are also harder to come by; because they are not completely dried out and cured like dry-roasted peanut varieties they have a shorter shelf life. Most green peanuts are eventually boiled to become the southern road-side snack favorite "boiled peanuts". During Waldron’s busy months, they produce 5,000 bushels of green peanuts a day. Waldron sells these peanuts from as far south as Homestead, Florida, to as far north as Boston and Canada and all the way out to Texas.

The interesting thing about Gene Waldron is that he used to be a John Deere dealer. He owned Marion Tractor and then Green South with locations in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. So how did this John Deere aficionado become a Ring Power customer? Challenger tractors. Waldron has a fleet of thirty-six agricultural tractors. Of these, his favorite are the four Challengers he bought from Ring Power. The Challengers are his favorite for a very simple reason: they save him money. And a lot of it. Waldron said that he can run a Challenger MT575B with the same horsepower as his 7820 Deere machine for twice the amount of time on the same amount of fuel. Pulling the harrows, his Deere machines have to be refueled every day. Challenger tractors only need to be refueled every two days. The Challenger tractor saves him at least fifty gallons of fuel every day. That comes out to over $23,000 worth of savings per year for just one tractor alone. Waldron says, "The savings in fuel alone makes it worth it, but it’s the service that really makes the difference."

Waldron explains that every hour a tractor isn’t Waldron Farm's Green Peanutsworking, is an hour he’s not making money. He said Ring Power’s one hour field service turn around time makes all the difference in the world. Waldron explained, "Deere never once made it out here in under an hour, even when I owned the company!" Waldron can’t afford any down time, especially during harvesting season, and that is why he relies on Ring Power’s service department to be there at a moment’s notice to get him back up and running.

Of the thirty-two Deere tractors remaining in Waldron’s fleet, he plans to keep zero. Every single one will be traded in for the Challenger equivalent as soon as the warranties run out. Waldron could not be more pleased with his Challenger machines and is happy to tell anyone about it! More Challengers mean more peanuts!

Ring Power Supplies CAT Equipment to FELD Motorsports

March 30, 2010 at 12:50 PMRing Power

Ring Power Helps Make Monster Jam a Smash!

Monster TruckIn three different cities, on four different nights, Ring Power supplied all the CATâ equipment necessary to build and stage a monster truck show. The Monster Jam’s Florida leg started in Tampa at Raymond James Stadium on January 23. Monster Jam had an encore performance in Tampa on February 6th after having an interim show at Orlando’s Citrus Bowl on January 30. The Florida tour de force ended with a completely sold out show in Jacksonville on February 27.

So exactly how did Ring Power come to sponsor these events? It all started with a phone call from Feldâ Motorsports’ director of operations for track construction, Dan Allen, to the Sales Coordinator for The CAT Rental Storeâ in Tampa J.D. Fagan. Dan explained to J.D. that his company had been using Neff Rentals of Florida for the last ten years. The last year Dan Allen did business with Neff he was extremely disappointed with the quality of equipment he received. Poor quality equipment creates a time crunch for Feld. The more equipment breaks down, the less time they have to create the monster truck course. He knew he was guaranteed the very best quality equipment if he rented from the local CAT dealer. So he called us.

The CAT Rental Store in Tampa supplied the following equipment:

325 Hydraulic Excavator   CAT Multi Terrain Loader smoothes dirt mound

330 Hydraulic Excavator

950 Wheel Loader

928 Wheel Loader

D5GLGP Dozer

D3KLGP Dozer

(2) 297 Multi Terrain Loaders

2400 Gallon Water Truck

(2) 6000 lb Telehandlers (Cat TL642 & Lull 644E)

(2) JCB 940 Straight Mast Forklifts

Laymor 8HC 3-wheeled broom

(2) Light Towers

30kW Generator

The CAT Rental Store in Jacksonville supplied this equipment:

(2) 330 Hydraulic Excavators  CAT Telehandler moves car during Monster Jam

950 Wheel Loader

930 Wheel Loader

D5GLGP Dozer

D3KLGP Dozer

297 Multi Terrain Loader

287 Multi Terrain Loader

2400 Gallon Water Truck

(2) 6000 lb Telehandlers (Cat TL642 & Lull 644E)

(1) 10,000 lb Telehandler (Cat TL1055)

Laymor 8HC 3-wheeled Broom

All these pieces of equipment were used to transport dirt from an off site dirt pit. CAT excavators and loaders dumped dirt into over the road dump trucks that then drove the 35,000 yards of dirt required to build the monster truck course to the stadium. Once inside the stadium, bulldozers and multi terrain loaders shaped and moved the thousands of yards of dirt to create the course. The Feld employees enjoy the track building process almost as much as the Monster Jam show itself. Steve Carmack, the Event Supervisor, explained, "I can’t believe this is my job! This is what we do: (waves arm across entire stadium floor of dirt and equipment) Kids playing with heavy equipment in the dirt. Who didn’t play with a Tonka truck in a sandbox as a kid? At Feld, we’ve just never grown up. Bigger sandbox, bigger toys. As operators, we definitely prefer CAT machines. They’re quicker, smoother, easier to run, hugely efficient. If we ever have the opportunity to use CAT, we do!"

The use of CAT equipment doesn’t end with the completion of the track, it continues throughout the show. Any time a monster truck flips or a car needs to be moved, CAT telehandlers are right on hand to effortlessly correct the upturned vehicle. In Jacksonville, Feld used a 930 loader without a bucket to tow broken down trucks off the track.

In exchange for the equipment, Feld gave Ring Power tickets to each show. In addition to so many of our employees and customers attending in the show for free, Feld used the Ring Power logo on the jumbotrons and LED banners. Feld also displayed some of the smaller pieces of equipment at the Pit Parties that took place before the rally. Feld read public announcements about Ring Power over the loud speakers and displayed our banners around the ground level of the stadium. In Jacksonville, they even custom painted the CAT logo on the main dirt mound!

The Monster Jam truck shows turned out to be a huge success at every one of their Florida stops. Feld was extremely pleased with the quality of the equipment across the state and the eagerness to help displayed by all Ring Power employees, especially Will Courtney and J.D. Fagan. Feld will again use Ring Power for their Motocross tour in March and any future Monster Jam shows. Kudos to CAT Rental guys Will and J.D.!

Managing Your Heavy Construction Equipment's Cost Per Hour

March 4, 2010 at 11:06 AMRing Power
A good planned maintenance for your heavy construction equipment can lower your machine's cost per hour.

In terms of construction equipment management, preventive maintenance is the key factor that has the greatest effect on your profits over the life of your heavy equipment. It is estimated that system contamination is the leading cause of more then 70% of construction equipment maintenancehydraulic system and major component failures. When heavy machinery is well maintained and inspected regularly, there’s a higher probability that potential problems will be caught early—before they turn into bigger, more costly issues.

According to Caterpillar’s SOMA (Site Operation Maintenance Advisor), major component life can be increased by 62% simply by improving maintenance practices from average to excellent.

Consider your current preventive maintenance practices and service needs and ask yourself, “Who is best qualified to provide these services?” As your Caterpillar® dealer, we are convinced that Ring Power’s Planned Maintenance Solutions can meet your maintenance needs in the most timely, efficient and cost-effective manner.

Planned Maintenance Solutions is more then just an oil and filter change for your construction equipment. It is a maintenance management system, designed to incorporates seven elements that are essential to keeping machine productivity high and owning and
operating costs low.

THE SEVEN ELEMENTS
1) Preventive Maintenance is the basic requirement of a good construction equipment maintenance program, and includes regular oil and filter changes as outlined in the manufacturer’s lubrication and maintenance manual.

2) Oil Sampling lets you know what is going on inside your machine. When tested at regular intervals, oil samples can forecast wear-related problems and keep minor problems from becoming a major failure.
PM Solutions will sample each compartment every 250 hours. Ring Power's oil testing lab technicians and product support staff closely monitor the oil sample results. Actionable oil samples are transmitted electronically to your PC, laptop or Blackberry so we can respond to potential problems quickly.

3) Inspections can detect problems that may otherwise go unnoticed. Small problems like oil leaks, worn belts or corroded batteries can lead to expensive downtime if not corrected in a timely manner. All inspections are written, reviewed and sent to you within 24 hours of when the service is performed.

4) Scheduling ensures all maintenance and inspections are performed on time, and at your convenience. PM Solutions operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week so maintenance will be performed around your work schedule.

5) Record Keeping documents machine repair history with details of component life and cost. Good record keeping helps identify problem areas that create high cost and downtime.

6) Repair Management is about maximizing the value of your heavy machinery investment. Oil sample trends, machine hours and condition are vital information in the decision making process of whether to repair, rebuild or replace your machine. Ring Power knows your equipment best. As a trusted advisor, we’ll be here over the life cycle of your machine. We’ll partner with you to maximize the value of your equipment investment and strengthen your reputation as a profitable operation.

7) Training helps your associates develop good daily work habits. As your maintenance provider, Ring Power is ready to fill the gaps by providing on-site training for your machine operators and maintenance personnel.

As a Planned Maintenance Solutions customer you can expect:

• A no cost warranty of 5-year/10,000-hour warranty on rebuilt power train components

• Environmental compliance in disposing of waste oil and filters
• Cost per hour billing that matches your expense with your workload. Only pay for the hours you have run your heavy equipment.
• ProductLink hardware and Equipment Manager software enabling remote equipment monitoring from your desktop. (supplied on most current models).

Preventive maintenance for your construction machinery delivers positive results—no matter how many machines you operate, how old your equipment is or what type of work you do. Goodwin Brothers Construction: Keeping It All in the Family

January 11, 2010 at 10:30 AMRing Power
Godwin Brothers Construction
Goodwin Brothers Construction, located in Brooksville, Fla., specializes in site preparation, mining operations, underground utility and excavation work, and—recently—land surveying. The company also owns a fleet of dump trucks to haul quarry loads to processing centers and reclaimed asphalt to recycling plants. Daniel "Boone" Goodwin, the man behind the company, has relied on superior time management skills and Cat® construction equipment to build a solid reputation for quality work ever since he founded the company in 1987.

Goodwin grew up in what is now called Wesley Chapel, Fla. back when about a dozen families lived within a five-mile radius, and began his career in construction in 1966 as a dozer operator for a Lakeland-based company. After 10 years with this company, Goodwin tried relocating to North Carolina but soon realized his dislike of cold weather and snow. Upon his return to Florida a year later, Goodwin took charge of a subcontracting company in the Brooksville area that specialized in stripping overburden. By the mid-eighties Goodwin was doing mining work all over the state from Newberry to Ft. Pierce. Then, during a slow point in 1985, he took advantage of an option to buy out his partner and incorporated Goodwin Brothers Construction two years later.

As Goodwin continued to grow the company and adapt to customer’s demands for underground utility and excavation work, Goodwin Brothers continued to expand and upgrade its operational facilities: from residential offices, to a pole-barn on agricultural land, to its present location just across the street from Ring Power’s Brooksville branch on Ponce de Leon Boulevard, where it has remained for the past 12 years.

Goodwin’s foresight and self-confidence are evident in the name he chose for his company, which he figured would spare his sons the trouble of having to change the name after he retired. And he was right. Each of the four Goodwin brothers now manages a different aspect of the family business. Daniel handles the estimates, orders the materials and oversees the day-to-day operations. Eddie oversees the underground utility, site prep and paving projects. David is in charge of the company’s mining projects and Michael and the mechanics keep the company’s entire fleet of equipment and trucks running smoothly. This delegation of responsibilities leaves Goodwin free to enjoy his preferred duty on the job site: operating equipment—especially the paver.

Goodwin firmly believes he owes his success to the community that has provided him and his company so many opportunities from the beginning, and he gives back whenever he can. Sometimes by sponsoring little league teams, sometimes by bidding high and often on livestock at the county fair (and giving the bulk of the meat to employees and friends!) Known as a man who still values a handshake, Goodwin is held in high esteem by those with whom his company does business. He lets his company’s reputation speak for itself.

"That’s the way you do business; that’s the way I do business. If I tell somebody I’m going to do something, that’s the way it is," said Goodwin. "People that see us working on one job…see the name on the equipment, and want us to come work on another."

Goodwin has been a Ring Power customer for three decades, since the Rozier days. He still keeps an eye out for new machines that offer ease of use and superior productivity. As a result, he has amassed a broad variety of equipment over theGoodwin Brothers Construction years, allowing his company to meet whatever challenges they face. His inventory of equipment includes off-road trucks, a 400-series backhoe, a 330 and a 345 excavator, various D3, D5, D6, and D8 tractors, a 950H and a 980 wheel loader and a 12H motor grader. Goodwin also recently purchased an AP600 paver to replace an AP800 because he preferred the extended screed for parking lot work; and a 12M because the company needed a second motor grader.

Recognizing that a good name and the respect of your clients and community comes first may not be a new idea, but the commitment to the ideal is something Goodwin Brothers Construction strives to maintain in daily operations. While Goodwin may someday step down, his long-term planning will allow his sons to carry on with the company’s goals—and they won’t even have to change the name on the sign out front.

Goodwin Brothers Construction can be reached at 352.796.0149 or goodwinbrosconst@yahoo.com.
